Metabolic Health Markers:

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic Syndrome refers to a collection of interrelated risk factors which often occur together. When left untreated, they raise your risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other serious health problems.

Metabolic syndrome requires ongoing care and if left undetected or untreated, can impact your quality of life and reduce life expectancy. Being aware of the specific symptoms and conditions which contribute to your risk of Metabolic Syndrome will let you take steps towards early treatment, detection or even prevention.

We incorporate into our programs comprehensive metabolic syndrome treatment - addressing all metabolic health issues.

Weight Management

Maintaining a healthy weight is a key factor in reducing the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and associated chronic conditions. With 2-in-3 Australians now overweight or obese, the risk of developing many serious diseases and health conditions is high. And while we understand that making long term lifestyle changes is significant in preventing and treating these conditions, we also know that having a pre-existing condition can make it a lot more challenging.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with the demands of modern living can be challenging for all. Despite the many approaches to weight management, many find themselves in a continuous cycle without sustainable outcomes.

We are currently running a weight-management program to help you lose weight and lower your risk.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol refers to a type of fat that is essential in the body to build cells and make vitamins and other hormones. There are two types of cholesterol which occur within the body including low density lipoprotein (LDL) known as ‘bad cholesterol’ and high density lipoprotein (HDL) otherwise known as ‘good cholesterol’.

It is vital to ensure that cholesterol levels remain within a healthy range as high LDL and low HDL increases risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease or strokes. High cholesterol is common, however many individuals don’t know they have it due to the lack of symptoms. The importance of detection and treatment is therefore pivotal to ensure a good quality of life and lower your risk of life threatening disease.

From capsules to diet changes and conflicting opinions on how to manage cholesterol, many people struggle to find a long term solution to suit their needs. This can create confusion and promote ineffective treatment.

Diabetes

Diabetes refers to the condition where the body is unable to maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood as a result of a genetic condition or lifestyle related factors. The three main types of diabetes include Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes.

Type 1

Type 1 diabetes is generally a result of genetic predisposition and is commonly diagnosed in adolescents and children, however, can be developed at all ages. This form of diabetes is when the pancreas is unable to produce sufficient insulin and therefore sugar builds up in the bloodstream.

Type 2

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the condition and is usually most common in adults. Type 2 diabetes is when the body becomes resistant to the effect of insulin and therefore builds up sugar in the bloodstream. The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing and therefore preventing and treating the condition is key.

Gestational

Gestational diabetes is when the glucose levels in the bloodstream are elevated during pregnancy and can occasionally continue after delivery. This diagnosis can be distressing for many women however, it is important to understand that this will not commonly impact the baby, delivery or pregnancy if blood sugar levels are well maintained. It is important to ensure treatment throughout this period for not only the baby's health, but also as the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in future increases.

Diabetes requires ongoing self-care and if not treated or wlel managed can lead to damaging the body’s organs which can lead to heart attack, stroke and other complications with the kidneys, eyes, gums, feet and nerves.

We are committed to ensuring early detection of diabetes and helping you manage your blood sugar levels.

Blood Pressure

High blood pressure refers to the strong force of blood exerted on the walls of the arteries and is a leading Metabolic Syndrome risk factor that develops over time. With 34% of adults in Australia with high blood pressure, the risk of developing serious disease such as heart attack or stroke is high.

While we understand that making sustainable lifestyle changes is important, we also know that having a pre-existing condition can make it a lot more challenging. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle including exercising, eating well and not smoking will assist in prevention and treatment of the issue and will lower the chance of heart attack and stroke.

How does the Assessment work?

A comprehensive health assessment with a nurse practitioner is a proactive step toward understanding and managing potential metabolic risk factors.

During the appointment, the nurse practitioner will conduct a thorough examination, inquire about medical history, discuss lifestyle factors and any concerns you may have. The screening process will likely include a review of blood rest results, assessing key indicators such as cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and other metabolic markers.

Based on this assessment, personalised guidance will be provided to develop a plan for prevention or treatment. If specific risk factors are identified, the nurse practitioner may recommend further medical interventions or consultations with specialists.
